  FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Amalgam Fillings- Are they safe?

This has been a controversial topic over the past few years. The fact is that no one can be sure of it's potential effects especially on the Nervous System. There is more evidence coming to light about the effects of amalgam on the body. Because the evidence is inclusive, we are able to offer alternatives that are more cosmetic. Our practice routinely uses the white composite fillings, but will use amalgam if the patient prefers.

Whiter Teeth- What are the alternatives?

A number of factors can contribute to discoloration, including, antibiotic staining, trauma to teeth, nerve death, aging and use of staining substances, such as coffee tea or tobacco. Before recommending tooth whitening for you, we need to diagnose the exact cause of your tooth discoloration. Once the cause has been established we can then decide the best procedure. At one time, crowns (caps) were the only alternative to restoring badly discoloured or decayed teeth. More recently, porcelain veneers and composite bonding have become available as an attractive alternative. Now there's another alternative to make natural teeth look their brightest. This process reverses the discoloration of tooth enamel to create a white, more aesthetic appearance. The advantages of this procedure are that no natural tooth structure is lost, and no anesthetic re required.

Very Nervous or Anxious Patients?

For patients that are extremely anxious we can arrange I.V. Sedation, which is conducted, in our surgery every four to six weeks conducted by Dr Roger Bastow and Dr Tony Brown.

Happy Gas is also available for apprehensive patients at no extra charge.
The advantage of the happy gas is that it has no lasting effects, and patients are able to drive immediately after treatment.

Should I have a professially made mouthguard or one from the chemist?

"The injuries sustained whilst wearing over-the-counter mouthguards, suggested little or no protection. Over the counter mouthguards are promoted as providing some level of protection but the material used is too soft and distorts in the players mouth. The resulting poor fit and lack of resilience fails to provide adequate protection." Dr B Dorney-Sports Dentistry NSW.

As a service to the community we offer professionally made pressure formed custom fitted mouthguards at rebate only for patients who are in a health fund, and those not in a fund, we have reduced the cost to $100.00. Mouthguards protect your teeth from damage resulting in expensive Cosmetic Dentistry and Jaw and Joint problems.
